JAN I VAN CUYCK, RIDDER EN DIPLOMAAT
Grave (The Netherlands) - Graafs Museum
17 June - 17 September 2017

According to contemporary accounts Jan I van Cuyck (d. 1308) was a wise and pious man, famous for his honour, a prudent politician and clever pacificator, who performed services for princes and barons. Historiographers and historians use superlatives when writing about him. Franz Funck-Brentano describes him as one of the most competent diplomats of his time. Jan I van Cuyck was very much respected and gained a lot of prestige and fame during his lifetime. Chroniclers and historians praise him for his bravery on the battlefield, for his work and activities in Cuijk and Grave, and for his actions on the international scene. Up until today Jan van Cuyck is considered a hero in the towns of Cuijk and Grave. He appears in the “canon of Grave”. Since 1865 a statue of Jan van Cuyck is standing on the main square of Cuijk. A mill in Sint Agatha near Cuijk, built in 1860, was named after Jan van Cuyck, as was the local footballteam (founded in 1931), a train and a party boat on the river Meuse.

OFFIZIERSEHRE UND WIDERSTAND
Das Reiterregiment 17 und die Wurzeln des Staatsstreiches vom 20. Juli 1944
Ingolstadt (Germany) - Bayerisches Armeemuseum
From 25 November 2014 onwards in Reduit Tilly

This exhibition, based on new research by Dr. Martina Metzger, offers new insights in the relationship between honor and resistance and explains how the old ideals of knights and cavaliers gave rise to different kinds of resistance to Hitler. Claus Schenck Graf von Stauffenberg and 6 other conspirators of the failed 20 July plot of 1944 to assassinate Adolf Hitler and remove the Nazi Party from power, belonged to the Bamberger Reiter- ind Kavallerieregiment 17 (17th Cavalry Regiment). Many other members of this regiment also developed resistance activities.
Horst van Cuyck - his father also was a member of this regiment - was the patron of this exhibition.

THE LEGACY OF CHARLEMAGNE
Ename (Belgium) - Provincial Heritage Centre
9 May - 30 November 2014

1200 years after Charlemagne’s death this grand and original exhibition tells the untold story of his legacy. Why did Europe stay divided for centuries after the splitting up of his immense realm in 843? Why did France and Germany fight one another until well into the 20th century? What is the missing link between the Roman / Carolingian Realm and Europe’s recent history?
Horst van Cuyck is patron of this prestigious exhibition about the legacy of Charlemagne.
